About the Department of Geosciences

Geosciences is an integrative and eclectic subject area within the natural sciences, and as such, students may have an opportunity to integrate knowledge from other sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as information from Engineering and Computer Science, Anthropology, and other areas into their curriculum and research. The Baylor University Department of Geosciences currently consists of 12 faculty, 7 administrative and technical staff, a freshman laboratory coordinator, and several post-doctoral researchers, 40 or so M.S. and Ph.D. students, and undergraduate students. We offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Geosciences with several concentration areas, and both the Master of Science and Ph.D. degree in Geology. Our current Faculty size and student bodies ensure that students will have ready access to Faculty for supplemental classroom instruction and research mentoring. Our teaching and research interests include a wide range of specializations within the broad areas of biogeosciences, energy geosciences, hydrological and surface processes, lithospheric processes, climate science, and solid earth and planetary sciences. Please visit our research and faculty pages to see the variety of exciting research topics that our faculty and students pursue.

The Department of Geosciences is located within the multipurpose Baylor Sciences Building (D409, main departmental office) that is purposefully designed for collaborations with faculty and students from our allied departments. Our facilities are equipped with a wide range of modern analytical instrumentation, computing resources, and specialized research labs described in detail on our facilities page. We also occupy the 5000 ft2 Carlile Geology Research Center, which is connected to the Baylor Sciences Building, and serves as our intersection between the lab and the field by housing small research labs and rock preparation and storage facilities.

If you are looking for a program that is vibrant, relevant to society, creative, and personable then Baylor Geosciences may be the place for you. For more information, I encourage you to explore our website, our most recent department newsletter, and our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages . If you are an alumnus/alumna of our Department who would like updates on what is happening in the Department, please provide us with your contact information here. Please feel free to contact the department or any of our faculty for more information . I also encourage you to stop by for a visit if you ever pass through Waco.
